You may have heard of bowling leagues, but there are leagues for other games too. Joining a league can be a great way to get to know other people who enjoy billiards (or darts) and consistently improve your skills in a competitive yet friendly environment.
If you’re worried that you may not know all of the ins and outs of how to play billiards, don’t worry. Everyone who signs up will be given a rules packet. Even for darts, learning and becoming familiar with the official League rules is a major step in growing your knowledge and skills.
League events are held at sponsoring bars throughout the Ames area. For summer 2022, there will be billiards leagues on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. Billiards play will start at 7 PM.
There are many options for playing billiards either by yourself or with a team. There are singles, doubles, 3-person teams, and 5-person teams. What team you decide on will determine the format and how many games will be played each night. You have a lot of options so choose what works best for you.
Joining a league gets you out and about in the community regularly. Being in a league gives you the opportunity to improve your game alongside both hobbyists and semi-pros. You get to meet like-minded people and make new friends. After a long pandemic that’s done a lot to isolate us, this could be just the thing you need to become social again.
Like other leagues, you will need to be able to commit to coming every week. If you want to compete with others locally but have scheduling conflicts, there’s an option for you. There is the State Games of America 2022 (replacing the Summer Iowa Games for this year only). This is a tournament for Billiards and will be held on July 30th (and 31st depending on the number of signups). It’s one day to showcase your skills and go head-to-head against some of the most skilled players in the state. It’s great practice and you can learn a lot just from watching the techniques and shots. Your deadline for registration for the State Games of America 2022 is July 18th.
There are also dart leagues if that is your preferred game. Dart leagues are sanctioned through the National Dart Association and the Billiards league is sanctioned by the Valley National 8-Ball League Association (VNEA). Both billiards and dart leagues will allow you to qualify for state tournaments if you’re looking to elevate your hobby.
